Health Risks Posed By Iron
Iron is listed as a secondary contaminant by the EPA.
This means that iron does not have a direct bearing on health if consumed, but when mixed with bacteria, it can be a health risk. The secondary maximum contaminant level (SMCL) for iron as laid down by the EPA is 0.3 mg/L.
- According to the EPA, the problems related to secondary contaminants are put into three categories.
- Aesthetic effects – this relates to the taste, color and odor of the water due to the contaminants. Iron makes the water reddish brown and has a metallic taste.
- Cosmetic effects – relates to the effects that a contaminant can cause to the skin and other physical attributes of a person. Presence of iron in water can cause dryness of skin and in some cases, a change in the color of hair.
- Technical – relates to the corrosive action of contaminants which can have economic implications. Iron is highly corrosive and causes staining and clogging of pipes. Iron can also cause scaling in pipes.
- The WHO states that 1-3mg/liter of iron concentrations in water are acceptable for drinking. Unfortunately, most well waters have iron content that exceeds this limit. Thus ingesting/using water above the limit can lead to Iron overload (IO) which is a condition that is usually associated with the inability of the body to handle excess iron.
If left untreated, iron overload can lead to a serious condition called hemochromatosis which can damage the body’s organs. This can also lead to other chronic problems like liver and heart disease and diabetes.

Testing For Iron in Water
If you’re concerned about the level of contamination in your well-water, a good idea is to get it tested. There are many reliable home testing kits that will give you an idea of the contaminants in your water.
However, if you’re not too confident about these kits you could always use a water sample kit from a certified laboratory.
You can find a list of certified laboratories in the United States on the EPA website.
In addition to this, some local health departments conduct free tests on private wells.
A test will also determine the levels of contaminants present in your water. According to the EPA standards, the SMPL for iron in water is 0.3 mg/L.
Anything above this limit will discolor your water and give it a metallic taste.
What kinds of iron are present in water?
Four types of iron are in found in water.
- Oxidized iron has red particles which are clearly visible when the water flows through a faucet. This insoluble iron clogs the pipeline or your household appliance.
- Clearwater iron which is soluble is generally not noticed until it comes out of the faucet. The discoloration happens when the water is exposed to the air for some time. This is because it mixes with the oxygen in the air to form Ferric oxide which is commonly known as rust.
- Colloidal Iron does not show up as red particles but makes your water look cloudier. It is difficult to filter this type of iron as the particles are extremely small in size.
- Bacterial Iron is evident as reddish/green slime build up in the flush tank of your toilet. It’s not easy to get rid of this type of iron and the best way to do it is by chlorinating the entire water system.

How Do You Remove Iron In Your Well Water?
One of the most effective ways of removing iron from your well water is by the process of filtration or flocculation.
Oxidized iron is generally easy to remove by this method as the insoluble particles stick easily to the filter. However, smaller particles of colloidal iron will not be easily removed by a regular filter. Use a membrane filter of .22 micron for this.
All the systems that we’ve listed above can effectively treat this problem.
Clear water iron is more difficult to get rid of as it is soluble in water. When ferrous iron is oxidized it first forms ferric ions.
These ions combine with free hydroxyl ions in water to form sticky gelatinous ferric hydroxide. Therefore it is necessary to use a filtration system with the ion exchange function.
A good water softener which targets iron is also a good option.
However, oxidized iron or iron bacteria present in water will coat or clog the ion exchange resin if the softener is not specifically meant for iron removal. The Iron Pro2 Combination Softener is a good system for this.
Oxidation combined with filtration
Aeration of water contaminated with soluble iron will help in oxidizing the ferrous iron.
With a sufficient supply of oxygen, the iron in alkaline water will be fully oxidized to form insoluble ferric hydroxide.

What are the types of filtration systems that filter iron?
There are 4 major types of whole house filtration systems in the market.
Activated Carbon Filter – This type of filter is ideal for most dangerous chemicals as the surface area that it covers is extensive.
Activated carbon is carbon with greater absorptive power because of the increased surface area.
AC has been specially treated to achieve this. The EPA recommends this treatment for dealing with 14 pesticides and herbicides.
The downside to using an AC filter is that it is not very effective in removing metals like copper and other inorganic impurities.
Reverse Osmosis – These systems are one of the most highly recommended as the technology that it uses removes almost all harmful contaminants.
A semi-permeable membrane traps impurities when water is forced through it.
The treated water is stored in a tank on the other side of the membrane while the trapped impurities are flushed out through a pipe.
This system also uses activated carbon filters to trap other impurities that can go through the membrane.
The downside to this system is that it requires a drain to flush out the impurities.
A lot of water is wasted too as it flushes out at least 5 gallons of wastewater for every gallon of clean water. These systems are also quite expensive.
UV Filters – These filters are the latest in the water purification industry but they are gaining in popularity. The technology that the Ultra Violet filters use is pretty straightforward.
Harmful microorganisms are targeted by UV rays, which results in their destruction. 99.9% of harmful microorganisms have been safely dispensed of with UV rays.
This filter has also been approved by the Food and Drugs Administration.
The downside to this system is that it doesn’t remove contaminants like heavy metals, herbicides and other impurities. The rays aren’t effective in murky water either.
Alkaline water ionizers – These ionizers separate water into 2 clusters – acidic and alkaline. The components which are acidic are flushed out through a hose at the bottom.
The alkaline water which is expelled through a spout at the top is used for drinking. Alkaline water is said to have some beneficial properties although these haven’t been scientifically proven.
